Human foods that are dangerous for dogs and cats: chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic - a golden dog looking at forbidden foods

“Delicious” Human Foods That May Be “Poison” for Dogs and Cats

As dog and cat parents, we can hardly resist those pleading eyes while we’re eating. But did you know that many foods on our dinner table contain compounds your dog’s or cat’s digestive system can’t handle, and some can even be life-threatening?

🚫 5 forbidden foods to avoid completely
1. Onions, garlic and green onions. This plant family can irritate the gut and damage red blood cells, leading to anemia, and cats are more sensitive than dogs.
2. Chocolate and caffeine. They contain methylxanthines such as theobromine and caffeine, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, an abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures or even death. The darker the chocolate, the greater the risk.
3. Grapes and raisins. Even a small amount may cause sudden kidney damage and kidney failure. The exact cause isn’t certain, but tartaric acid in grapes is suspected.
4. Macadamia nuts. They can make dogs weak, cause vomiting and make them wobbly on their feet.
5. Strongly seasoned food (salty/sweet/spicy). Very salty food causes thirst and frequent urination, and too much salt can cause salt poisoning, with vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, tremors or seizures. Some sweets contain xylitol, which can cause low blood sugar and liver damage.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my dog ate chocolate?

Contact a vet right away so they can judge whether the amount is dangerous. Darker, more bitter chocolate is more dangerous, and signs can take several hours to appear, so don’t wait for symptoms.

Is it dangerous if my dog ate just one grape?

It can be. There is no well-established safe or toxic dose, and some dogs are poisoned by even a small amount. Grapes, raisins and currants can damage the kidneys, so contact a vet immediately if your dog eats any.

Can cats eat onion or garlic?

No. Onions, garlic and chives (Allium species) can irritate the gut and damage red blood cells, leading to anemia, and cats are more susceptible than dogs. If your cat eats some, note the amount and contact a vet.

What happens if a dog eats macadamia nuts?

Dogs may show weakness, wobbliness, depression, vomiting, tremors and raised body temperature, usually within 12 hours of eating them. Contact a vet if your dog eats any.
